Arches National Park preserves over 2,000 natural sandstone arches, like the world-famous Delicate Arch, as well as many other unusual rock formations. In some areas, the forces of nature have exposed millions of years of geologic history. The extraordinary features of the park create a landscape of contrasting colors, landforms and textures that is unlike any other in the world.

Arches is located in a “high desert,” with elevations ranging from 4,085 to 5,653 feet above sea level. The climate is one of very hot summers, cold winters and very little rainfall. Even on a daily basis, temperatures may fluctuate as much as 50 degrees.

Native Americans never inhabited Arches on a year-round basis, though they certainly roamed the area searching for wild game, useful plants and rocks for tool-making. Petroglyphs near Wolfe Ranch are thought to have been created by Indians from the Ute/Paiute cultures.

This coin is presented with an photograph inlaid into a chrome finish coin. The back of the coin represents the engine of Amelia’s plane and is done in 3D.

July 24, 1897 – missing July 2, 1937, declared dead January 5, 1939. Amelia was a noted American aviation pioneer, and author. Earhart was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, awarded for becoming the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set many other records, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences, and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots.

During an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937, Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. Fascination with her life, career and disappearance continues to this day.

One particular sculpture that has captured the imagination of so many of us been that of Pakal, the image of a Maya ruler sculpted on the lid of a stone sarcophagus deep within the Temple of Inscriptions pyramid situated at the site of Palenque, Mexico.
In 1949, the Mexican archaeologist Alberto Ruz discovered a vaulted room beneath the floor of the Temple of Inscriptions, in which he also discovered this large sarcophagus. The most incredible reproduction of the images on this particular sarcophagus have been made by professor Marle Greene Roberston, through rubbings on rice paper.

The human figure portrayed in relief on that stone slab has become known as “the astronaut” to some; as “Pakal”, a maya ruler, to others. From the glyphs one may view the subject as Pakal; from the visual theme one may see something that looks like a spacecraft within which he is seated. Pakal appears to be seated at a control panel within a housing device, very similar to today’s space capsules.

This relief sculpture has been dated at around 690 our era, when there were apparently no space vehicles in existence; that we know of anyway. Pakal’s posture and positioning appear to reflect the concept of movement, with his body leaning slightly forward, as though he were travelling towards a specific point, in a particular direction. Hugh Harleston, Jr., in 1974, produced a very vivid image and detailed analysis of the possibility for interpreting Pakal’s housing device to represent a spacecraft.

Women of Distinction Series – Introductory Coin

This coin introduces our “Women of Distinction” series by celebrating a true pioneer of our time. Not only does it honor Rosa Park’s accomplishments but also celebrates Black history month. This coin is done primary in black and white with an antique silver finish and a Black Nickel finish.

The front photograph of the coin depicts Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat to a white person, while the back of the coin is an representation of the actual sign that hung on the bus.

On December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks refused to obey bus driver James Blake’s order that she give up her seat to make room for a white passenger. Her action sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Parks’s act of defiance became an important symbol of the modern Civil Rights Movement and Parks became an international icon of resistance to racial segregation. She organized and collaborated with civil rights leaders, including boycott leader Martin Luther King Jr., helping to launch him to national prominence in the civil rights movement.

Parks eventually received many honors ranging from the 1979 Springarm Medal to the Congressional Gold Medal, a posthumous statue in the United States Capitol’s National Statuary Hall, and the posthumous honor of lying in honor at the Capitol Rotunda.

Northwest Coast art is distinguished by the use of form lines, and the use of characteristic shapes referred to as ovoids, U forms and S forms. Before European contact, the most common media were wood (often Western red cedar), stone, and copper; since European contact, paper, canvas, glass, and precious metals have also been used. If paint is used, the most common colors are red and black, but yellow is also often used, particularly among Kwakwaka’wakw artists.

The patterns depicted include natural forms such as bears, ravens, eagles, and humans; legendary creatures such as thunderbirds and sisiutls; and abstract forms made up of the characteristic Northwest Coast shapes. Totem poles are the most well-known artifacts produced using this style. Northwest Coast artists are also notable for producing characteristic “bent-corner” or “bentwood” boxes, masks, and canoes. Northwest Coast designs were also used to decorate traditional First Nations household items such as spoons, ladles, baskets, hats, and paddles; since European contact, the Northwest Coast art style has increasingly been used in gallery-oriented forms such as paintings, prints and sculptures.

Finding your animal Totem

You do not choose an animal guide as your personal spirit guide. The animal chooses you and they decide to whom they will reveal themselves and make their friend. Do not fall into the trap of saying, “Gosh, I think the wolf is a smart, good looking and powerful animal, so the wolf will become my animal guide.” It does not work this way.

Each Animal has its own Medicine which is unique to that specific creature as gifted by the Great Mystery and its spirit cannot be chosen like the color of your new car. Discovering who your animal guides are is a process of paying attention to the spirits around you and following the signs. It is a process of developing your inner knowledge and spiritual understanding.

An individual can not be assigned a spirit guide by another person, regardless of who that person maybe, no more than another person can say how or when the Great Mystery of Life will be known to you.

What happens if you want an animal spirit so bad you can taste it (not literally) and one has not come to you? We have two suggestions for this case. First, pray about it. Second, be satisfied with whatever happens or does not happen. It if comes, then it comes. If it does not, then it does not. End of question.

RAVEN:

Famous Native American Creative Trickster God, Messenger of the Spirt World, known by many tribes under many names.
There is more to RAVEN than meets the eye. And how many of you have met the eye of a raven? They’ve always been associated with Godliness. Few people know that the first bird out of NOAH’s ark was a raven. It just didn’t return. It didn’t feel the need. ODIN relies on his two ravens to fly round the world every day and keep him informed. Edgar Allan Poe’s raven shrieked ‘Nevermore’ but what that has to do with anything only Poe knows.
In the beginning, RAVEN was first and foremost a Creator and Trickster God — especially of the Haida tribe, who claim he discovered the first humans hiding in a clam shell and brought them berries and salmon.

DRAGONFLY:

Flighty and carefree, strong imagination, higher aspirations.

As a creature of the wind, the dragonfly totem represents change. It’s iridescent wings are incredibly sensitive to the slightest breeze, and so we are reminded to heed where the proverbial wind blows – lest we run into stormy weather. Dragonflies are also creatures of the water, and any creature whose habitat is in, or around water carries symbolism relative the the subconscious, or “dreaming” mind and thoughts. This is because in the animal world, water is symbolic of the subconscious mind (”deeper mind, “dreaming mind”) and relates to the thoughts we have in relaxed, meditative, sleeping, subconscious states.

SEA LION:

The Sea Lion is the keeper of wisdom and shows us what is hidden deep within ourselves. They teach us how to integrate our imagination with the reasoning power of the intellect.

A Sea Lion totem can show you how to develop and focus your imagination. Seal people are highly imaginative and very creative, and they need activities that channel and direct those activities. Hearing and balance are very important for a Sea Lion totem. Learn to listen to your inner self and balance your life to it. Tap into your Sea Lion totem and expect your dreams to become more vivid and significant.
